After the police left, we said good night to Bas and Marigny.
âWeâll probably have to answer questions after they get a warrant,â Jiff said to Bas. âYou should consider getting Marigny an attorney to represent her in case they push this and want to arrest the two of you, and we donât find the real killer soon.â
In the car Jiff said, âThey didnât have anything to do with the dog at the shelter or the murder. They have a great big motive for either or both of them killing Whit. The police could arrest them over it in a heartbeat.â
âLike what?â I asked. âThe police know Bas and Marigny lied to them.â
âYes, they lied to the police. But, the police donât know why. Whit was threatening Marigny to post nude photos he took of Mavis on the internet. He took them or Mavis sent them to him while they were having their affair. Whit threatened Marigny to post her motherâs photos if she didnât pose for one in exchange.â
âWait. What? I knew Whit had girly photosâ¦wellâ¦porn, actually. He kept it in his bedside table.â I said and hurriedly added when Jiffâs head jerked in my direction, âClaudette told me that. She said he would cut photos out of magazines and keep them in his wallet. I guess he got tired of not knowing them personally.â
âHow could Mavis be soâ¦soâ¦naïve?â Jiff asked as if pondering the idea.
âI was going to say, stupid. How could Mavis be so stupid? She doesnât strike me as a dummy,â I said. âA drinker, yes, but a dimwit, no.â
âMarigny said Whit called her and asked her to come over to show her something. I guess he was drunk, and Justine left so he was looking to spice up his Monday night,â Jiff said.
âHe should have turned on Monday Night Football,â I said.
âThe season hasnât started yet,â Jiff said looking flummoxed. âThe Super Bowl was two months ago, remember?â
âI watched the Puppy Bowl,â I said. âAre they even at the same time?â
âYou like the commercials, I know you do,â he said.
âWhat? Never mind football. What time was she at Whitâs? Do you remember seeing Marigny hand Mavis something she put in her pocket on the tape? That could have been one of Whitâs nude photos of Mavis. If Marigny got that photo, does that mean she let Whit take a photo of her? If the police check Whitâs computer they will probably find more,â I said.
âYes, and thatâs not all. Marigny said she walked from home to Whitâs house. She had been home studying since four oâclock like Bas told the police. Her Dad wasnât aware she left until Mavis called him and said she was on her way to the guest house. Mavis told Bas the whole story about the nude photos. That gives him a motive for killing Whit. After Whit tried to get Marigny to pose nude for him in exchange for her Momâs photos, she ran out pushing the front door open and leaving it like that,â Jiff said.
